14th Annual Roswell Jazz Festival

October 16-20, 2019

Musicians and fans worldwide are discovering the world-class Roswell Jazz Festival. Dedicated to celebrating and educating people about America’s art form, the fourteenth annual festival is October 16-20.

Dr. Roger Dickerson had to evacuate his home in New Orleans, in 2005, due to Hurricane Katrina. His friend, from the 33rd U.S. Army Band, Roswell educator Frank Schlatter invited him to live in Roswell while he rebuilt his life. This was the beginning of the Roswell Jazz Festival (RJF).

Michael Francis, Roswell festival artistic director, is excited about the upcoming festival, “I was thrilled when I was invited to perform two-piano duets with Dr. Dickerson at Pecos Flavors Winery,” he said. “The duets, and other events, drew enthusiastic audiences.”

In October 2006, Schlatter and others established a 501 c(3). Patrons and local businesses provided generous financial support. The first Roswell Jazz Festival became a reality.

Many of America’s best jazz musicians were invited, including tenor saxophone legend Houston Person, who had served in the 33rd with Schlatter and Dickerson. Trumpeter Charles Gordon, RJF president, said this year’s festival will feature close to 30 world-class musicians. It will include ticketed performances and free events, educational classes, a blues show, a jam session, a Sunday morning jazz worship service, and a special jazz piano showcase.

The new civic center allows expansion of the RJF School of Jazz. There is a scholarship for local musicians to attend the North Texas State University summer jazz camp.
