Afton Love: Roswell Artist in-Residence Opening Reception

September 14, 2018 @ 5:30 pm - 7:00 pm

Join the opening reception for Afton Love, Roswell Artist-in-Residence. Starting in the Bassett Auditorium at 5:30 pm, you will be able to hear Afton’s lecture on her work then we will go into the Marshall and Winston Gallery to view her exhibit.
Afton Love’s practice develops out of an intimate interaction with her geographic surroundings, and engages the profound yet subtle geologic changes that occur to a landscape through time. Her practice encompasses multiple media, including drawing, casting, and photography. Her meticulous, detailed drawings record places where she has walked and wandered, and focus on revealed erosion and rock formations. Created on multiple sheets of tracing paper with powdered graphite, and then sealed in beeswax, the result is a luminous synthesis of graphite, wax, and paper; natural form and subjugated grid. In her castings, Love uses plaster, clay, latex, and resin to make casts of metates, rocks, and other surfaces, with a particular interest in highlighting the negative spaces that form these objects, spaces that have been created gradually through erosion or daily use. In all of her works, Love uses the act of creating art as a means to render the overwhelming scale of geologic time in intimate, human terms.

Afton Love earned her BFA at the California College of Arts. She has had residencies at several institutions, including the Vermont Studio Center, the Helene Wurlitzer Foundation and the Santa Fe Art Institute. Her work has been exhibited in solo and group shows in California, New Mexico, Massachusetts and New Zealand, among other places.
