The Pearl of the Pecos Arts and Culture District has partnered with Creative Carlsbad, Carlsbad Mainstreet, Keep Carlsbad Beautiful, and the City of Carlsbad to bring more public art to downtown Carlsbad by way of locally designed and painted murals on street-side electrical boxes.
This project has been in the works for quite some time, and at long last, in the summer of 2019, our first mural box was designed and painted by local artist, Mike Campos.
The theme for Campos’ box is, “Carlsbad, Where we’ve Been.” Campos did an outstanding job depicting historic sites as well as landmarks in snap-shot, polaroid-style imagery. Campos’ box can be found on the corner of Canyon and Mermod, just in front of the Pistol Packin’ Cowgirls boutique.
The second box is currently underway, on the corner of Mermod and Halagueno, with the theme, “Carlsbad, Who we Are.” Carlsbad High School’s art teacher, Elijah Nieto, and his advanced art students have been assigned this box. A joint effort in rendering and execution, Nieto and his students have created a masterful design, with vivid colors, bursting with Carlsbad Culture. This box is expected to be complete by the end of July.
We are excited that additional multiple electrical box murals will be painted in the coming months.
