JoLynn Hope, RN and I, Joyce Munoz, BSN, RN co-founded J&J Home Care, Inc. in March 1995.
The vision of our non-profit organization was to provide quality nursing and therapeutic care in our hometown through home health services. We started with a single patient 25 years ago and have provided services to hundreds of local families.
At our first location at 601 Mahone, JoLynn was our CEO and I was the COO and only field nurse. We had two other employees, Mary Lou Thomas, CNA/HHA and an administrative assistant. Local physicians gave us our first referrals and we began to grow from there. By 1998 we had hired several nurses including our first Director of Nursing. We also added several home health aides and extended services to include social work and physical therapy.
J&J quickly became the home town source for meeting home health care needs. In 1999 we added Medical Fragile, Disabled and Elderly, and Developmental Disabilities Case Management state waiver programs. New growth prompted a move to a bigger location, 2314 W. Main.
There, in 2001 we expanded services again to include contracts with Medicaid, Medicare, Private Insurance, and private pay. We also began to provide personal care services through Medicaid Personal Care Services which broadened our opportunity to meet the non-medical needs of the aging in our community. In addition, we secured a contract with Early and Periodic Screening, Diagnostic and Treatment Services (EPSDT).
This resulted in an influx of younger patients and employees. Through this program, we provided services to children under the age of 21 who are covered by the New Mexico Medicaid Plan. During this time, we also added occupational therapy.
JoLynn resigned from her position in 2001 and I became the CEO. Case management services were expanded and we added 15 case managers and provided support/services to over 300 individuals both in Artesia and throughout Southeast New Mexico. Our hometown homecare specialties were now touching the lives of families beyond the boundaries of our small town.
In July 2007, Ben Harvey, CPA was hired to be the CFO. Once again, we found ourselves outgrowing our base of operations and relocated to our current address at 1301 W. Grand. We also added speech therapy services, rounding out the rehabilitative support team.
Today, Shara Ivans, BSN, RN is the Director of Clinical Services. Becky Muniz, CNA/HHA is the Director of Personal Care Services and Private Duty Services. Dolly Richards, CM is the Director of Social Services. Sarah Herrington is the Director of Case Management. We have 10 staff members that have been with us for over 15 years, 23 that have been with us for over 10 years, and 25 staff that have been with us for over 5 years.
Our agency is run by a governing board of directors and currently provides services to over 400 individuals, clients, and patients. We have over 110 staff who takes great pride in providing medical and non-medical care to our fellow Artesians and southeastern New Mexicans.
While our vision 25 years ago was to provide quality and skilled care to our friends and neighbors, our services have extended throughout the region. We have been a member of the NM Association of Home and Hospice Care since 1995. Since 2009, J&J Home Care has been accredited by the Community Health Accreditation Partner (CHAP). CHAP accreditation demonstrates that our programs meet the industry’s highest standards.
Through the years, J&J Home Care has won numerous awards. In 2019, our agency was recognized through patient satisfaction surveys as performing in the top 25% nationwide. This year, we achieved the coveted 5-star rating from Medicare; the only home health care agency to achieve this in New Mexico! Across the country, agencies fall “in the middle” with 3 or 3.5 stars. A star rating higher than 3.5 means that an agency’s performance was better than average compared to other agencies in the country. We always knew our clinicians and staff were 5-star and we are so pleased that they are getting the recognition they deserve.
This agency started with a dream to improve the lives of people in our community. Two nurses, two staff members, and one patient grew into the thriving home health agency that J&J Home Care is today. We hope to continue serving our community for many years to come.
